Spitfire MK.1 History:
The Spitfire Mk. 1 Supermarine was delivered by the Woolston line in late 1937. Its front-line service started in August 1938. The aircraft was the outcome of a 1930 Air Ministry issued spec F7/30 calling for a new fighter armed with four machine guns. The Spitfire Mk. 1 Supermarine was designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell and was produced by the Supermarine Company.
Reginald Joseph Mitchell was an aeronautical engineer born in the village of Talke, Newcastle-under-Lyme, in England. He joined the Supermarine Aviation Works at Southampton in 1917 and was appointed the Chief Designer at Supermarine in 1918. He died of cancer in 1937. He was best known for his design of the Supermarine Spitfire.
The first prototype Spitfire Mk. 1 was first tested on 5th March, 1936 and flew at 350 mph (563 km/h) and could ascend at approximately 2,500 ft (762 m) per minute. With its slender aerodynamic lines and elliptical-plan wings, it was claimed at that time as the smallest and cleanest aircraft that could be constructed around a man and an engine. This model has measurements of: Span: 9" Len: 6" and Scale: 1/48
