S.25 Sunderland History: The Short Sunderland was a military flying boat manufactured by Short Brothers. The Sunderland has different variants. The first is the S.25 which is also known as the Sunderland Mark I. It flew from the River Medway on the 16th of October 1937. In October of 1941 the aircraft was lifted with the ASV Mark II radar. The next variant is the Sunderland Mark II. Its production started in August of 1941 and it featured the Pegasus XVIII engine that has two-speed superchargers. This engine was originally planned to be featured on the Sunderland Mark I. Sunderland Mark III was quickly produced in December 1941. It featured those revisions that were tested on a Mark I. And this version of Sunderland proved to be one of the Royal Air Force Coastal Command’s special weapons against the enemies U-boats of the Consolidated PBY Catalina. In 1942, the Sunderland Mark IV was produced for an improved version of the Sunderland. It has a more powerful Bristol Hercules engine, defensive armament, and other special enhancements. It has stronger wing like the Mark III plus larger tailplanes and longer fuselage. Its armament was heavier than the early version that has .50 inch machine guns and a 20mm Hispano cannon. With the changes made to the aircraft it was redesignated as the Short Seaford. The next was the Sunderland Mark V. It was produced because of the crew’s concern over the lack of power of the Pegasus engine. The Short Sunderland III allows 8 to 11 flight crew that includes two pilots, radio operator, navigator, engineer, bomb-aimer, and three to five gunners. This model has measurements of: Span: 18 7/8" Len: 13 3/4" and Scale: 1/72
