S-64 Skycrane Erickson History: The S-64 Skycrane is a twin-engine heavy-lift helicopter manufactured by the Erickson Air-Crane company. On May 9, 1962, the first prototype of S-64 flew and was followed by two further examples for evaluation by the German armed forces. The S-64 was originally a Sikorsky aircraft and the manufacturing rights were purchased from them by Erickson Air-Crane 1992 and since then, Erickson Air-Crane became the manufacturer and the largest operator of S-64 Aircranes and it has made over 1,350 changes to the airframe, instrumentation and payload capabilities of the helicopter. S-64 Aircranes were sold to the Italian and Korean Forest Services for fire suppression and emergency response duties. Those in the Erickson fleet were leased worldwide to organiztions, companies and Federal Agencies for short or long term use. The S-64 was designed as an enlarged version of the Sikorsky S-60. It has a six-blade main rotor and is powered by two 4,050 shp JFTD12A turboshaft engines. Erickson manufactured new S-64s and remanufactured existing CH-54s for firefighting and logging industries. Erickson gave each S-64 an individual name, the most known name was the "Elvis" which was used in fighting fires in Australia. Other operators such as the Silly Brothers named their Sikorsky S-64E "Andy's Pride". Another Erickson S-64E "Olga" was used to lift the top section of the CN Tower into place.
