Vietnam Huey Helicopter Collection History:
The Huey story traces back over four decades. A great advance in helicopter propulsion had come in the 1950s with the adaptation of the gas turbine engine to helicopter flight. The piston-drive engines used in Korea and on the Army's UH-34 utility helicopters in the 1950s and early 1960s had produced only one horsepower for each three pounds of engine weight.
In 1955, the Army had the Airforce develop a new helicopter for its use. The first turbine-powered helicopter of the Army was the Bell Helicopter Company's model, the XH-40. The XH-40 designation was given to the first three aircrafts in the original helicopter designation series. The Army adopted a two-letter designation system, such as the H-40 became the HU-1 which stands for "Helicopter Utility". And from this designation, along comes Huey, a name which was very popular and remained known to many. The DOD standard designation system reversed it then to UH-1, the first designation in the DOD helicopter series. The UH-1 was developed through successive models since it has incorporated larger engines and increased capacity.
The Huey helicopter flew more combat flight hours than any aircraft in history. The Huey was the very first turbine powered helicopter. According to Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association statistics, there are 7,013 Hueys that were flown in Vietnam.
After 40 years of production, the Huey is still being produced today in various upgraded models and there are over 16,000 Hueys produced and flown in more than 40 countries.
