MD-11 UPS History: The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a medium to long-range widebody airliner, incorporating three engines; two mounted on underwing pylons and the third engine at the base of the vertical stablizer. Its features were derived from the DC-10, except that the MD-11 is 18.6 feet longer than the earlier DC-10 trijet and it was capable of carrying up to about 50 more passengers. The MD-11 program was launched on December 30, 1986 with commitments for 52 orders, though there were orders cancelled by Dragonair, Scandinavian and UTA in 1988. The MD-11 was produced in Long Beach, California, at the Douglas Products Division of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes until February 2001. Its maiden flight was on January 10, 1990. The first MD-11 was delivered to Finair on December 1990 and it was put into service that same year by Delta Airlines. The MD-11 was one of the first to employ a computer-assisted pitch stability augmentation system featuring a fue ballast tank in the airplaneand a partly computer-driven horizontal stabilizer. Following the merge of McDonnell Douglas and Boeing in 1997, the company announced that MD-11 production will continue but in 1998, Boeing announced that MD production will end after filling current orders. During June and September 2000, the last two MD-11s were manufactured. The MD-11 has four models available and an extended-range (ER) feature was available on all versions. It has a seating capacity which varies from 285 in a three-class arrangement to 410 in an all-economy configuration. Aerodynamic, propulsion, aircraft systems, cockpit avionics and interior design improvements were featured to reduce drag, save fuel and for added range. There were a total of 200 MD-11s built, with a total of 191 aircraft still in airline service.
