USS Monitor History:
USS Monitor is the first ironclad warship ordered and commissioned by the United States Navy, after Galena and New Ironsides and became notable for its participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 9, 1862, during the American Civil War.
The term "Monitor" describes a broad class of European harbor defense craft. USS Monitor was designed by John Ericsson, a Swedish engineer. The original design of the ship utilizes a system of heavy metal shutters, protecting the gun ports while reloading. USS Monitor was innovative in construction technique and design. USS Monitor became the prototype for the monitor class of warship and many were built, including river monitors and deep-sea monitors. USS Monitor participated in Civil War battles on the Mississippi and James rivers.
IN 1973, the ironclad USS Monitor's wreck was found on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, about 16 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. In 1986, USS Monitor was designated a National Historic Landmark and is one of only three accessible monitor wrecks in the world.
