Typhoon Class Russian Submarine History:
The Typhoon Class Russian Submarine, world’s largest, is one of the most powerful military machines ever to exist, but one that can travel almost completely silently. It was the most feared weapons of the Cold War. The Submarine has four 630mm torpedo tubes and two 533mm torpedo tubes with a total of 22 anti-submarine missiles and torpedoes.
The submarine's design includes features for traveling under ice and ice-breaking. It has an advanced stern fin with horizontal hydroplane fitted after the screws. The nose horizontal hydroplanes are in the bow section and are retractable into the hull.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) apparently derived the name 'Typhoon' from a 1974 speech by Leonid Brezhnev which mentioned a new SSBN called the "Tayfun". In fact, the Russian name for the class is "Akula" - "Shark" - which should not be confused with NATO's "Akula" SSN (which the Russians designate as "Bars").
