The Aermacchi MB-339 is an Italian military trainer and light attack aircraft and is one of the most successful product in the Alenia Aermacchi portfolio.
Aermacchi's maiden flight took place on August 12, 1976 and was delivered to the Italian Air Force in 1979. The MB-339 is perfectly suited to pilots, teaching them weapons system management in a high-performance environment. The MB-339 is in service in nine different nations. The Italian Air Force operates t with a secondary close support role.
The MB-339 is a fully aerobatic, tandem two-seat, single-turbojet advanced trainer. It has a maximum speed level (sea level) of 470 KTAS and a range of 1,120 nm. The MB-339CB is the New Zealand version (weapons training with laser designation, radar detection, AIM-9L and AGM-65 MAverick capability and there were 17 in storage at RNZAF Base Ohakea, New Zealand.
In 2004, an enhanced version of MB-339 with a much-modernized cockpit is still in production, with half of them going to the Italian Air Force. There were 223 MB-339s built and has accumulated over 500,000 flight hours experience worldwide.
