F-9F-8 Cougar Blue Angels History:
The F9F-8 Cougar was the final fighter version of the F9F Cougar. It was an aircraft carrier-based fighter aircraft for the United States Navy.
The Navy considered the Cougar an updated version of the Panther and it replaced the Panther's straight wing with a more modern swept wing. The prototypes and modified Panthers were quickly produced and its maiden flight was on September 20, 1951.
The final fighter version which was the F9F-8 features an 8 inch stretch in the fuselage and modified wings with greater chord and wing area, thus improving speed, high angle of attack flying and to give more room for furl tanks. Most F9F-8s were given inflight refueling probes and most earlier aircraft were modified to this configuration. There were 601 aircraft delivered between April 1954 and March 1957.
During 1958-1959, F9F-8s were withdrawn from front-line service and was replaced by the Vought F8U Crusader and Grumman F11F Tiger. The F9F-8s operators include Argentina, Argentine Navy, United States Navy, and the United States Marine Corps.
The F9F-8 Cougar has a maximum speed of 647 mph and a range 1,312 mi.
